02:03 — Why ThaiVisa started

I explain that ThaiVisa began in 2002, when useful English-language information about visas and everyday legal or administrative questions in Thailand was difficult to find online. The first version was essentially one page covering practical subjects such as visas, marriage and divorce.

03:00 — Early online roots

My interest in online communities went back to Swedish bulletin-board systems and early home computing. That background made a forum feel like the obvious answer when friends and visitors began asking questions the static page could not anticipate.

04:45 — From questions to a forum

The forum grew from people answering one another. Members contributed specialist knowledge and local experience, while moderators helped organise discussion and keep it usable. The community increasingly became the product.

06:13 — News and the 2004 tsunami

News was added around 2003. During the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, members posted urgent reports about affected places and missing people. Traffic overwhelmed the site’s capacity, showing both how important live community information could be and how much stronger the infrastructure needed to become.

07:50 — Email newsletters

Newsletters became a major source of repeat traffic. Instead of waiting for people to remember the address, email brought new discussions and stories back to them and helped make visiting ThaiVisa a habit.

09:33 — Local forums and daily work

Geographic and special-interest sections expanded the range of reasons to participate. Running the platform involved very long days: technical administration, editorial choices, commercial work and constant attention to the community happened together.

11:18 — AdSense and sustainability

Google AdSense created a practical revenue stream at the right time. Income funded server upgrades and allowed the operation to become more professional, while community events and experiments strengthened the relationship with members.

13:02 — Why moderators mattered

Volunteer moderators were essential. They handled spam, insults, repeated questions and potentially risky material. The interview stresses that moderation was not peripheral housekeeping; it was the work that made a large forum possible.

17:47 — Watching the audience in real time

Live analytics showed which topics were attracting attention and what happened when a newsletter was sent. Community reports could also reveal changes in immigration practice quickly, because members compared real experiences from different offices.

19:25 — A hobby becomes a business

As the audience grew, ThaiVisa needed more reliable news, systems and commercial discipline. The newsletter ultimately reached a substantial audience; contemporary 2015 acquisition coverage later reported more than 300,000 subscribers.

29:29 — The approach and sale

I describe receiving an unsolicited approach from Dan Cheeseman and the process that led to the sale. Choice Group Asia publicly announced its acquisition of Thaivisa and associated assets on 1 September 2015.

33:18 — More than information

The forum provided practical news and advice, but it also gave social contact to expatriates who might otherwise feel isolated. That human role explains why participants invested time and emotion in the community.

36:27 — ThaiVisa becomes ASEAN NOW

The 2021 rebrand was intended to support a broader regional direction. At the same time, social media, Reddit and changing advertising economics were putting pressure on the traditional forum model.

40:57 — Returning during another transition

I later returned to ASEAN NOW and worked through another ownership transition. In April 2024, The Thaiger announced its acquisition of ASEAN NOW’s digital assets, and I stayed for a transition period.

45:39 — Experiments and lessons

The final part covers lessons about owning important digital relationships, as well as experiments with classifieds, property, web radio and video news. The consistent theme is adaptation: channels change, but useful information and trusted communities retain value.
